A video of the incident shows dozens of Afghans armed with sticks running after the vehicles of customs officials and police and rangers on Tariq Road who attempted to conduct a raid on Monday night.

Tariq Road is one of Karachi’s busiest commercial hubs and the shopping malls and markets have many clothing shops, mostly owned by Afghans. After fleeing from their country, these Afghans have settled in this city. A source in the Customs department confirmed the incident and said that after receiving intelligence, a team of the department along with police and rangers reached Tariq Road. He said that information was received that Afghan shopkeepers were selling clothes worth lakhs of rupees.

Many Afghan refugees in Pakistan have started businesses in Karachi and other parts of the country, and they deal in clothes, carpets, curtains and rugs. It has shops or leased shops in almost all major commercial centers and malls in Karachi. Afghans living illegally in Pakistan will have to return home by November 1 or be forcibly deported back to Afghanistan after the deadline, a police official said.
