Newsclick Raid: Prabir Purkayastha arrested in Newsclick funding case, 46 people interrogated

Newsclick funding case – The Delhi Police on Tuesday (October 3) arrested its founders Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty in connection with the funding case of digital news website NewsClick. Officials said the office of the news portal was sealed after the special cell of the police conducted raids in connection with the investigation into foreign funds.

Police said that so far two accused namely Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty have been arrested in connection with the raid, seizure and custody in connection with the UAPA case registered in the Special Cell. A total of 37 male suspects were interrogated while 9 female suspects were interrogated at their residences. During this period, digital devices and documents etc. have been seized/collected for investigation.
The Special Cell of the Delhi Police on Tuesday morning began raiding the residences of NewsClick and its associated journalists in a case filed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), an anti-terrorism law. The journalists whose homes the police reached include Bhasha Singh, Abhisar Sharma, Urmilesh, Anindyo Chakraborty and Paranjay Guha Thakurta.

What is the charge?
The action comes after NewsClick was accused of receiving money for pro-China propaganda. The website was recently in the news for allegedly taking money from American millionaire Neville Roy Singham for pro-China propaganda in India.
