First time in India : Urokul Performs Prostate Gland Treatment Without Surgery

Pune: Urokul Hospital from Pune introduced Prostate gland Treatment technology without surgery called ‘Rezum therapy’ an unique procedure for Prostate Gland Treatment the first time in India. Rezum Therapy is 10-minute procedure than a conventional 2 hours operation, without any complications. This technology is now available at Baner-based Urokul-Kulkarni Uro Surgery Institute. Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni was addressing in a press conference at Urokul hospital on Thursday. The conference was witnessed by Indias first laparoscopy woman Dr. Jyotsna Kulkarni, President of Baner-Balewadi Medico’s Association Dr. Rajesh Deshpande, Radiologist Dr. Saket Patwardhan, Chief Executive Officer of Urokul Dr. Abhay Chaudhary, Administrative Officer Dr. Pramod Bhave.

Dr. Kulkarni said, “Traditional surgery on the prostate gland is known as ‘Transurethral Resection of the Prostate’ (TURP). The patient has to stay for about two to three days in the hospital. The surgery lasts for an hour. Patients had to bear unbearable pain during the treatment. Moreover, patient loses the ability to ejaculate after sexual intercourse. This conventional surgery costs about 2 to 2.5 lack.”

Explaining the benefits of Rezum therapy, Dr. Kulkarni said, "As a solution to TURP, Urokul has come up with a revolutionary technology called ‘Rezum Therapy’. In this procedure, we core the prostate gland by removing bits of prostatic tissues with Water Vapor Therapy. This procedure involves non-surgically dissolving the enlarged part of the prostate gland with the help of steam injections. This therapy is usually an outpatient procedure. It is done under local anesthesia. The procedure lasts for about 10 minutes. Patient is discharged the same day after 2-4 hours. A small catheter is kept for 5-7 days. This procedure costs around 4 lack.”

Over a few weeks, patient’s body’s natural healing response absorbs the treated prostate tissue, shrinking the prostate. This improves the obstructive symptoms due to enlarged prostate tissue. Most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as two weeks, and maximum benefit may occur within three months, he added.

“Rezum has success rate of over 80 percent. It can be used for treating all types of patients with various sizes of prostate gland. It can be used to treat patients with retention of urine due to prostate problems. The important advantage of Rezum is it preserves ejaculation. It is most beneficial for young and all patients who wish to preserve ejaculation,” said Dr. Jyotsna Kulkarni.
