Vishwas Pathak | Country’s economy on a growth trajectory in Modi government’s tenure

Vishwas Pathak – The country has progressed at a record momentum, thanks to the strategic decisions taken in the economic sector during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, asserted Bharatiya Janata Party state joint chief spokesperson Vishwas Pathak on Saturday. He was talking to media persons at the BJP state office. On this occasion, state media in-charge Navnath Ban and state spokesperson Omprakash Chauhan were present. It was necessary to inform people about the harsh reality of the economic malpractices and corrupt administration of the UPA government and hence the central government came up with the white paper which was tabled in the Parliament, stated Shri. Pathak.

Shri. Pathak presented an account of how the UPA government, during its tenure from 2004 to 2014, pushed the country to the abyss and destabilized and weakened the country’s economy. In 2014, when the Modi government came to power, it had numerous challenges. The government effectively dealt with these challenges and with sound economic planning and introduction of various schemes, it managed to make India, the fifth largest economy in the world. Shri. Pathak also expressed belief that our economy will jump to the third position in the near future.

While presenting a comparative analysis of the economy’s performance in sectors like electricity, water, gas, educational opportunities, etc during the 10-year tenure of UPA vis-à-vis the NDA governments, Shri. Pathak lashed out at the mismanagement during the earlier government’s tenure. He said that during UPA, India’s average inflation had reached a whopping 8.2% resulting in the common man having to bear the brunt of inflation for 10 consecutive years. The Modi government on the other hand made fundamental changes in the economy and succeeded in bringing down the inflation rate to 5%. India’s economy continued to progress rapidly despite the Covid crisis. Nearly 25 crore people were lifted above the poverty line due to the numerous schemes introduced to make ‘Antyodaya’ a reality.

During the UPA government, the entire banking system was in shambles. The interference by the UPA ministers to get loans sanctioned to their close associates increased the bad debts of the banks. Today, owing to the banking policy of the Modi government, many banks are becoming efficient and playing an important role in making India a developed nation. During UPA tenure, there were only 14 crore gas connections across the country. Now, under Modi government’s Ujjwala Yojana, that figure has gone beyond 31 crores in just 10 years. During UPA’s tenure, electrification of rural India had not taken place whereas 100 per cent electrification has been done during NDA’s tenure. During UPA tenure, certain places in the country that would receive electricity for 12 hours on an average today receives electricity for almost 20.6 hours during the NDA tenure. In 2014, only 3 crore households in rural areas had clean water taps. Today, in 10 years, Modi government’s Jaljeevan Mission has ensured that nearly 13.8 crore households have clean water taps. Under DBT, there were only 10 crore beneficiaries during the UPA government whereas today, under the Modi government there are as many as 166 crore beneficiaries under 310 different schemes. More than 25 crore people have been freed from poverty in the last 10 years. During UPA government, the number of mobile internet users in the country was only 6 crores whereas today it is more than 90 crores. Today, high speed 5G internet service is available in villages at affordable rates.

Also, by making radical changes in the education sector, the Modi government achieved progress during its tenure, said Shri. Pathak adding that during UPA tenure, the number of medical colleges was only 387 whereas today the number has increased to 706. During the UPA government, 51,000 seats were available for medical education in the country and today, this number has gone up to over 1 lakh. Today, there are 1,168 universities in the country which was only 676 during UPA’s tenure.

Shri. Pathak said that the Modi government always laid emphasis on strengthening infrastructure. Today, 20 cities across the country have metros plying whereas only 5 cities had metros during the UPA government. New roads are getting built at a speed of about 28kms per day in the country which was 12kms during the tenure of UPA government. In the last 10 years, 54,000 km highways have been constructed as against 25,000 km during UPA’s tenure. The number of operational airports in the country has increased from 74 during the UPA era to 149. Exports have gone up from $7.6 billion to record level of $22.7. Today, more than 1.17 lakh startups have registered across the country as against 350 startups during UPA’s tenure. In short, Modi government has achieved overall development of the country in the last 10 years, informed Shr. Pathak.
